In 2007, a new book by Dr. Naomi Wolf was published titled The End Of America: A Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot. It is she discusses ten steps for closing down a democratic society. She explores how these are warning signs to look for when a democracy is closing down and sliding into an autocratic state. Wolf discusses the importance of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. When the press is restricted or co-opted, after a certain point democracy suffers. This is becauuse ordinary citizens can no longer discern the signs of the times, or trust what to believe.
On page 127 of her book Naomi Wolf writes "After a certain point in a fascist shift, it doesn't matter whether most people believe the faked news or not - eventually they simply don't have access to enough good information to assess what is real and what is not. In accounts of the Chinese prodemocracy uprising in 1989, you can hear well-intentioned Chinese citizens struggling with this: The Voice of America radio station was reporting on the uprising accurately, describing the protesters as idealistic students - but the Politburo was accusing the VOA of spreading unpatriotic lies. Chinese state TV, print, and radio called the protesters counterrevolutionary "criminals" and "ruffians." Citizens, frightened by this, were writing letters to their newspapers haplessly explaining that they had diligently compared the VOA reports and the Politburo reports - and they found the Politburo reports to be the more accurate.... At that point, the state had made truth fungible."
The Intrepid Viking Substack wrote piece on the Trudeau government's deliberate smearing of the Freedom Convoy with the help of the legacy media back in November when the Inquiry was underway. I cited numerous examples of new reports alleging racisms foreign funding, extremism, etc. All debunk by actual Inquiry testimony, or just plain facts.https://roxannehalverson.substack.com/p/inquiry-reveals-liberal-governments
I'm being prompted to say why I am now a paid subscriber, despite the fixed income, hahaha
1. Trish is unafraid to call a spade a feccin' shovel.
2. She's a fell-oh Canuck.
3. Trish's deliberations and they are that, pass all my BS filters.
Closing in on my 75th year, I can find savings in other areas to compensate for this 'largess'. hahaha The key to life's dregs is "detachment". This does not imply we have become complacent nor disinterested. Au contraire; we simply do not allow ourselves to become emotionally involved, since that often leads to physical anomalies in the temple for our souls; i.e., the bawdy...politic. However, we feel deeply - - - passionately in justice for all and a final end to this hierarchical, paternalistic, patriarchal culture, where far too many are sleep-walking the awakened into extinction. Let's try to imagine true evolution, rather than this devolutionary path we are being led down. Alas, the term 'sheeple' is used by some in a defamatory manner. When I was young I understood the word education to mean the process of learning to think for oneSelf. Trish helps us do this. Kudos Ms Wood!
People I knew as friends for over fifty years, neighbours with whom I broke bread frequently, relatives, and even my own adult children - they all broke my heart with their expressions of uninformed adulation of Trudeau and irrational hatred of 'The Truckers' who dared to protest his mandated vaccines. I can never look at them the same way ever again.
I hauled groceries for a regional trucking co. all through the pandemic. Still do. During the trucker's protest I had this older guy try to praise me for continuing to 'feed my family' by not joining the protest. LOL. I'm 67 - I think they can feed themselves at this point. Told him I'd be in Ottawa myself except I don't own the truck, at which point he went nuts and starting ranting about how he'd fought for this country, and how I had no idea what it was like to have people shooting at me. A genuine nutcase. I assumed he was talking about Afghanistan, a conflict we had no business being in, and I really felt like saying "too bad they missed" but that might have sent him right over the edge, so I just told him to piss off.
You want to know what the average Canadian is like, just try getting a 53 ft trailer into the Walmart parking lot on a Saturday afternoon. I'd say about 1 in 10 are aware enough to know why you're there and stay out of your way. The rest are either oblivious or openly hostile.
I'm moving to Russia soon. Had enough of this country.
Great article again, Trish! The word COWARDICE is the key. Our society educates, creates, then pays the intelligentsia far more than they're worth. We elevate them with title, sheepskins for their office walls and they honour that distinction with MBs ensconced in the driveway of their 10, 000 sq. ft. mansions. What we get are quislings who go along to get along. Many have taken back door money. No, we cannot prove that, but, as I wrote in your last article, imagine you are a criminal selling/dispensing, drugs making a windfall "killing". How far would you go to protect that windfall? Seems they went all the way, eh?! btw,I'm still in love with interrobangs.
Thanks for writing on this topic, Trish. Never forget that human rights NGOs like Amnesty International sided with Trudeau against the truckers. Here is my commemoration of Tiananmen Square for this year: https://yuribezmenov.substack.com/p/tiananmen-square-massacre-cultural-revolution

Speaking of Tiananmen, how can anyone NOT think of this song in these unruly, tumultuous times? Written by a quintessential Canadian of course.
It's coming through a hole in the air
From those nights in Tiananmen Square
It's coming from the feel
That this ain't exactly real
Or it's real, but it ain't exactly there
From the wars against disorder
From the sirens night and day
From the fires of the homeless
From the ashes of the gay
Democracy is coming to the USA
[...]
It's coming from the sorrow in the street
The holy places where the races meet
From the homicidal bitchin'
That goes down in every kitchen
To determine who will serve and who will eat
From the wells of disappointment
Where the women kneel to pray
For the grace of God in the desert here
And the desert far away:
Democracy is coming to the USA
[...]
It's here the family's broken
And it's here the lonely say
That the heart has got to open
In a fundamental way
Democracy is coming to the USA
L.C.~ Democracy, 1992

Thank you, Trish. I started listening to your podcasts about a year ago and you have kept me sane in this insane world.
