It would seem that our Liberal Party didn't know that the most powerful army the world has ever seen lies an undefended border away, and we have no way of halting it. The government's primary external job was ensuring the 600 lb gorilla never became annoyed with us, in other words they should have been politic when dealing with the two Trump administrations, rather snotty, and morally superior. Canada can't win a trade war with an economy over ten times our size. Preemptively slamming in tariffs on US goods (123 pages of stuff, if you look) is just adding a 25% tax on consumers and wrapping it in false jingoism. If tariffs are a dumb thing for Trump to do, why is it a smart thing for our government to do? Carney will end this country.

Great analysis Mark. The level of stupidity in this country right now is terrifying.

Expand full comment

Absolutely. Any Canadian business that isn't seriously harmed by the US tariffs will be crippled by the Canadian counter-tariffs. This will be worse than the covid debacle.

And hurt most of all, as usual, will be the Canadian consumer. Third world, here we come.

Let's not forget exactly WHO benefits from collecting these TARIFFS. Government bank accounts will grow substantially, while corporations and small businesses alike, pass on these additional costs to us, the consumer. Another attempt to destroy the middle class.

In his excellent 2013 book, Chris Hatfield describes the extensive degree of planning, preparation and strategy required in order to prevent catastrophe in outer space. He summarizes the failure to do so in a single quote, "There is no problem so bad that we can't make it worse". Those words echo in my head as I watch Canadian politicians, who abjectly failed to prepare, now offer emotional, knee-jerk responses to U.S. tariffs.

This pod was your absolute best IMO and I listen to many including the bros with Patrick Bet-David, the tech guys at the All In Pod and others. But you were different. Unrestrained or something. I have recommended you to so many. Maybe your time alone was really important. I have the book “Provoked” because its what I believed happened. Bravo!

Thanks Barbara....I really appreciated the kind words.

Good lord, where to start with all this nonsense.

1. If Canada gets this upcoming election wrong (by electing MC), it is likely truly and fully cooked as any sort of place anyone with any options would want to call home.

2. Trump turning back on the provision of intelligence, war materials and targeting aid to Ukraine while it attacks Russian civilians should stop Russia from taking the US seriously. He was off to a good start, but now he's just being hypocritical. What an embarrassment.

3. Canada will get nowhere beating its chest about tariffs. They need to figure out what the US wants, and figure out how to make it happen. Nothing Canada has done in the last 10 years has put it in a position to be able to be self-sufficient or capable of being competitive on its own.

Weak men create hard times - guess what's next.

The absolute immediate issue is, CARNEY'S been 'placed' in this position by his WEF GLOBALIST buddies. For anyone of us to believe an upcoming election won't be rigged, think again. We already experienced it in BC. This 'cult' of liars schemers play dirty at a level we have never experienced until the infiltration the WEF acolytes who formed our government. I'm very worried.

Why, oh why, do the idiots that run our country choose to engage in an unwinnable trade war, rather than secure our borders against the influx of fentanyl? In light of the recent revelations that Trudeau met with Paul King Jin (I hope I remember the name correctly), it seems like the ruling class has some strong incentives to ensure that fentanyl continues to flood across the southern border.

On the related topic of the sudden patriotism our rulers have shown, it all rings so hollow. To quote the substitute drama teacher and part-time snowboarding instructor himself: "Canada is the first post-national state, with no core culture of its own for immigrants to assimilate into." And not a peep of disagreement was heard from the establishment. Oh, but now that the evil orange man would like us to stop the flow of drugs that are killing people, now it's time for enthusiastic flag waving. Fix problems? No, but Canada First! Performative nonesense, and nothing else.

Regarding your point on Media complicity. I encourage people to do some searches on the Grants and Contributions webpage. Search words eg, COVID, VACCINE HESITANCY, MEDIA, AIRLINES, MASKS, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), CANADIAN RED CROSS. Use your imagination and I assure you, you will be surprised and angered to see where our hard earned tax dollars are going and for what. https://search.open.canada.ca/grants/?sort=agreement_value+desc&search_text=&page=1#

There were only 50 lbs. of fentanyl seized coming across the very long border from Canada for ALL of 2024. See: https://usafacts.org/answers/how-much-fentanyl-is-seized-at-us-borders/country/united-states/ You quote some media re more.. the MSM Trish? The is some fuckery about and is not about Fentanyl.

So the absence of seized goods prove that there is no contraband coming across the border? There's a logical fallacy here.

We have containers full of stolen cars leaving ports in Canada for destinations all over the world, a huge drug trafficking problem in Canada as a distribution node for drugs all over the world, but we blithely assume fentanyl isn't a problem? The obvious implication is that Canada is underperforming on border security.

Canada and the US shares one of the longest borders in the world, with relatively few official crossing points, and lots of wilderness in between.

Last October, the RCMP busted a BC fentanyl lab with 54 kg of the stuff (in addition to other hard drugs) worth half a trillion dollars, and lethal enough to kill every Canadian twice.

In addition, BC had two licensed labs producing cocaine and other hard drugs, ostensibly as a regulated supplier for the "safe supply" channel. How leak-proof is that channel, however?

Last October, TD Bank was assessed a $US 3 billion penalty by the US Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, for failing to properly screen for money laundering operations by drug cartels.

While none of the above anecdotes prove that Canada is a narco state, it certainly does not negate that possibility.

Trump is complaining about drugs and illegal people entering his country, why doesn’t he tighten up his own border? Last time I checked, countries cannot control who and what leaves their jurisdiction, they only control who and what comes in. So this is on Trump‘s CBP agency to “tighten up the border“. If illegal guns and drugs are coming into “our” country from the United States, that is a problem with our borders, and our CBSA officers are the ones responsible for that. But anything going into the United States is the responsibility of Trump‘s CBP officers. So how is this our fault? Hey Trump, if you’re so worried about things getting into your country, why don’t you give your CBP officers a pep talk and tighten up your borders?

It’s unfortunate that mr baber has abandoned the rational critical thought he championed. His parroting of idf propaganda has been more than disappointing- not expecting him to agree with me but to at very least show some balance AND yes critical thought.
