SPECIAL: THE FRONTLINES OF GAZA MEDICINE
Dr. Yasser Khan is back in Canada with stories of horror and humanity.
Recently I posted a letter from a young Canadian eye-specialist doctor in Gaza on a medical mission. It described injuries and medical outcomes beyond gruesome, including people who suffered multiple amputations and eye removals due to the bombings. Many are pulled from the rubble with catastrophic crush damage. Explosions send shrapnel flying into unprotected eyeballs that can’t be saved.
Dr. Khan explains the terrible living and sanitary conditions but also notes the spirit of the people in Gaza who are enduring the unendurable. So far, 200 hundred medical workers have been killed, including doctors and paramedics. Some of them have foreign passports and could leave but they stay to care for the endless stream of casualties. History will write textbooks about the heroism of Gaza doctors doing as much as the can, with very little, while living under the very real threat of death.
It is extreme battlefield medicine being practiced on a civilian population.
The audio version of the show ran this weekend. Here is the video with some photographs. I didn’t use some that were too graphic — and a few of these are upsetting but worth looking at and learning from.
Thank you Dr. Khan!
Stay critical.
And remember, if they are selling a war — you are being lied to.
Thank you both. I went to bed thinking about all those people, especially the little children and the bravery of the healthcare workers and ambulance staff. I also wonder about all the poor animals too, the cats, dogs, donkeys, etc. Long-suffering, patient beings. If I could stop this with just my willing it to stop, I would. I wish it to stop with all my might and I know so many of us feel this way. Heart-wrenching. Did it seem that the Israeli government said a slightly hopeful thing today about reigning in their terror and killing?
Breaks my heart. The neocons have no reverse gear and no morality. My deepest respect for Dr. Khan, you and the many other selfless people trying to make a positive difference. And yes, "if they are selling a war — you are being lied to."
