In the olden days of journalism we called our cameramen shooters and that’s just what Lincoln Jay did last week while out on a story with David Menzies, both with Rebel News. He didn’t know when he set out that morning that he would capture police arresting reporter Menzies in a scene viewed by over 14 M worldwide. Another shame on our country as it is pretty clear in the video that the bumper was in fact not Menzies but the cop who handcuffed him. It looks, at least in my opinion, like an NBA-level foul flop, perhaps an intentional move by the arresting officer. But unclear.
David is the star for keeping his cool and making a narrative drama out of it, like the most talented reporters can. But I kept thinking about the person who recorded it. Having done a number of these myself, I always relied on my cameramen to know what to do in that instant — make sure the video is being recorded and the audio is working, all the while following the action and not tipping over. It’s tough and quite an art form. So for me, young Lincoln was really the star of the show. He is a lovely guy and his attitude offers some hope for my old profession.
I thought you’d like to meet him.
