On a more serious note, it was very refreshing to hear Dr. Doctorow say that Putin is a cool, rational decision maker. He is ruthless, because nice guys don't run countries such as Russia for very long, but also pragmatic. Putin is not an ideological actor. He's not communist like China, doesn't preside over a cult of personality like North Korea, and is not a religious zealot like Iran.
This is good news. If preserving Russia is his overarching goal, he will not be likely to launch any nukes unless doing so is less of a threat to Russia than what he is launching against. If I know that a nuclear exchange is the end of civilisation, Putin definitely does too. I would be surprised if he used nuclear weapons in Ukraine, as the winds would carry the fallout into Russia, and probably destroy some of the most fertile farmland in the world.
Why the west is pursuing this war, damn the consequences, is multifaceted, but at the end of the day it comes down to money. As CJ Hopkins would say, this is Globocap™ in action. This is not a criticism - I think it actually speaks to the good side of our nature. But it keeps us from being able to understand evil, of which there is so very much afoot in our world right now (it's on a rampage, dare I say). 2. I think also that there are far more psychopaths - & more common garden variety mentally ill people in the world- than most of us (naive) people are able to grasp. & they rise to power, & wow, do they ever do a lot of damage!? I fear that the "blob" or deep state or whoever/whatever really runs things, are so mentally ill they'd rather destroy us all than pass power peacefully to Trump (who may indeed do his own share of bad things; we can't be sure). Think about divorce for a minute. Some of us manage to conduct rather civil ones. Others can't be content until they've ruined the lives of all involved. I am not a religious person - not at all. But maybe even those of us who have little or no faith need to be praying a lot right now.
