A new fad is sweeping North America — adult children refusing any contact with their parents — many of them because they are now “living their truth”. One in four families are estranged in significant ways that feel like a kind of sad ghosting. Part cultural phenomenon and part a result of trends in psychotherapy — mothers are labelled narcissists by daughters who say they feel “unheard”. Families are blown apart by a child who wants “no contact” because his parents voted for Donald Trump. It is a dangerous attack on the family and one that is harming society.

Ann Bauer has written an acclaimed piece on family estrangement for Persuasion Magazine.
